William Lychack was the Fellow assigned to my workshop at Bread Loaf last month. A Fellow is a writer with one book published who serves as an assistant to the workshop leader, a writer farther along in his or her career (in my case here, Lan Samantha Chang, who will become director of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop in January). Bill (getting informal and sounding like I’m dropping names) was extremely helpful to me. Here’s a line that reminded me of myself:
. . . she wondered how she could have been so careless and let so many friends fall away, let herself become the type of woman who had no one in her life to get a cup of coffee with.
